Thinking of Sedge keys

(back to entrance)
With only eight taxa, the key chart of the Solanaceae could easily combine the synoptic view with readable character descriptions. For a genus like Carex, with 101 species in the Swedish flora this is hardly possible. I just had to see what could be done, anyway. (You can imagine the time spent - but it's nice to have the visualized structure to work with.) The indented key for Carex in Krok-Almqvist is subdivided into four main keys and covers eight pages. A few of the species key out in more than one place. So you can certainly not fit the character descriptions into the synoptic view in such a maneagable space as for the Solaneceae.
For one thing, some of the descriptions are long - and often the longest ones are those where there's least space in the structure: choices leading to small groups of taxa. And for most of the topmost choices there's much more space than the text needs. What a waste! perhaps one could make a polar chart...
