Japanese Mustard Greens,

Brassica juncea var. rugosa

As rumor told me they doubted
my designation of this as Collards
- produced by considerable browsing,
accompanied by considerable confusion -
and as I wasn't altogether
convinced by the alternative suggestions
- although as starting points for googling-
they were quite helpful -
with much further browsing
and a bit of nibbling: yes, it has a peppery sting...

... and those pictures of Japanese Mustard Greens
"Red Giant" or "Purple Giant"
look more like this S-weed
than anything else I have seen.

This:

is "Miike Purple Giant"
as shown at Evergreenseeds

And THEN I remembered that half used seed packet
from last summer, when the mix of Japanese Greens
refused to thrive on my shady balcony:
one of the ingredients was "Mustard Red Giant".

Not that I threw my surplus away on the Fancy Hill
but it shows they're a current fad.
