Junglerice, Göteborg, August 13th, 2001

If you just look
long enough, close enough
you will find something rare.

...ah, well, no.
No such automatic magic. But the Junglerice
has not been seen in Sweden for almost ten years
Erik tells me
and now I came across this in my currently most rewarding patch.

Echinochloa colonum
Kycklinghirs i september och i november

Eva Ekeblad, 2001

I notice that most recent sources use the form 'colona'
but follow the advice of Erik Ljungstrand
who knows his botanical Latin.
Thus this "hedgehog grass of the cultivated grounds
(or perhaps the colonies?)" will be Echinochloa colonum with me.

In Chinese:
Guang tou bai

In Malay: Padi burong
In Burmese: Myet thi
In Arabic: Abû rukbah
In Thai: Ya nok sichom phu
In Nepalese: Saamaa ghans

You will find these and and an assortment of Echinochloic names at the University of Melbourne
