Swedish Goosefoot, Göteborg, September 16th, 2001

End of June the Goosefoot paradise had a good shave, down to the naked soil. By the end of August (see pic) it was rich with Chenopods and Persicarias again. The power of life in those banked seeds! Then first week in September, weeding again, before the seeds of the Swedish Goosefoot were a mature black. The whole Goosefoot feast gone, only stray and midget samples. The one today grew by the mailboxes.

Seed characteristics
are supposedly the clearest difference
between Chenopodium suecicum
and Chenopodium album
but it's difficult
to get these tiny dots to perform
under the magnifier or on the scanner:
to get them to stand on edge.

The suecicum above
has rounded edges
while the album below has like a seam
as if the two halves of the shell
have been welded together.

Sometimes I see it.

September 16th last year presents the Fat Hen, Chenopodium album
I'm still learning about the differences between these two:
how to actually see the relevant characteristics.
