Prickly Sow-thistle, Göteborg, January 5th, 2002

Sonchus asper
Svinmolke i oktober, i december och i augusti

Eva Ekeblad, 2002

To complement the sample from the last day of last December
which showed a flowering plant overcome by the frost
here are some leaves from winter rosettes
showing how the Prickly Sowthistle may succeed as a winter annual.

Today like yesterday:
fog
and a temperature
hovering around the freezing point

Passing by on his way to the car parking he said:
"Spring, is it now?"

as I was putting these leaves in my plastic box.

"Temporarily. Yes. Temporarily."

It's not
like there was space
for any more exhaustive
discussion

of the further prospects of winter
periods of cold to come
although hours of daylight are lengthening

of S-weed strategies that may be smart and daring
or just foolhardy
depending on how the winter turns out...

So I just collect the words
like I collect the weeds.
