You don't see it until you're up close,
but there is plenty of willowherbs in the shrubbery here:
winter rosettes of the Great Hairy
and of the American at the least.
That's all I dare say this time of the year
since I didn't patrol these patches
in their flowering time.
The small winter buds I could see on the American in September
have grown into fleshy rosettes, still held close to the body - and with their own captured air cushions.
For now you will have to go to March
of last year. If you want to compare with the rosette of the Broad-leaved.
So here I have walked today
hidden in open sight
without exchanging a spoken word with anyone, except with the guys in the fruit stall by the Mall,
where I bought my oranges.
