Göteborg, February 4th, 2002: Water Avens   and   Common Avens

Geum rivale
Humleblomster: mars, maj, augusti, december

Leaves and empty seed heads from the Water Avens here on the left side: the cores of seed heads are more than twice the length of those of the Common Avens (of which the whole dry structure of an inflorescence is shown).

Geum urbanum
Nejlikrot i juni, i augusti och i december

Eva Ekeblad, 2002

On the original S-weed territory there was one single plant of the Common Avens, that I kept revisiting. Now, with the territorial expansion I find that this was an outpost of the colony in the wooded slope on the other side of the eight-storey slices by the Mall

Afterthought
This is one of the pages documenting a path of learning:
the firmly taken missteps
that let us keep our footing
while stumbling towards what we don't know.
And by chance, also the random mishaps that winds of reality
can be trusted to bring to the process.

This page is with greetings to Erik Ljungstrand, who is burrowing this week through the piles of specimens in the Herbarium in Lund. It is thus with some trepidation I present the Avens growing along the new stretch of the Ditch, incorporated in the S-weed realm, close to the video store that was robbed the other week... where was I?
It is thus with some trepidation I present this Avens as Broad-leaved, Geum macrophyllum - but its seed heads ARE extraordinarily long, and at least some of the basal leaves rounded almost to kidney shape. (Hah!! turned out to be G. rivale - country yokel, not immigrant.)

Something funny happened on my way home: today was a very windy day, and as I stopped to take some pictures of the building I live in, and the new pile of cobblestones by the corner, where they've been dug up because the drain needs repair. I was holding a small bunch of dry sprigs from the Avens as well as the camera. And as I looked again, the wind had taken the only seed head that still had fruits on it. Well, that's actually not all that funny. Not for me and my scanner at least.
