Wood Groundsel, Göteborg, December 15th, 2001
|
I still don't get my head around
that smell
supposed to be charcteristic of the Wood Groundsel.
After mis-identifying it in September
and struggling with the allergies and colds blocking my sense of smell
the aromatic chord I sometimes smell, and think may be it
is present in the three of them, to my nose
- although weaker in the Common
and occluded by the rank content of those glands of the Stickie.
I had postponed it to next summer.
And now that Erik Ljungstrand has ferreted up
another sample, in that disturbed lawn
over in the next block
I'm beginning to get it
about the characteristic differences in hairiness.
It's just a pity that I need to get indoors to really see what I'm looking at.

This 8X detail shows the characteristic, very short, glandular hairs on the top side of a leaf from the Wood Groundsel - at least for my eyes,on my screen. I have not yet mastered the art of using the magnifier to see these things well, and find it much easier to use the scanner for visual enhancement (even though the quality is far from perfect.) |
